We have been chasing migratory browns and rainbows the whole season but for sure this last couple of weeks have been the best! Fish over 10 pounds are caught daily on the Limay, if you are a good speycaster, then this is the river you should be fishing by the end of the season.

Monster Trout- Limay River-

I have fished the Limay since child, it´s a challenging river, but the rewards are great. I will never forget my first time fishing it, 14 years old, I was with my brother and a friend in Rincon Chico (first section of the Limay) . While driving along the river we saw a guy landing a huge fish, he weighted the fish and the scale marked 13 pounds !!, after releasing it he said – I’ve never expected such big and hard fighting brown in this river, the quality of the fish here is as good as the Sea Runs of Rio Grande even if these are just Freshwater Brown trouts-.

Personally, I love big trouts, each time that I land a trophy fish on the Limay I want another and bigger!! But this time it was different, I didn’t want another …. THAT DAY!! HAHA!!.

Pacu Session on Upper Parana River

Dorado is one of my favorite fishes to target, perhaps more so than any other freshwater species. It has all the hallmarks of a quality game-fish on the fly: aggressive takes, acrobatic fights, brilliant colors, and the potential to reach monstrous sizes. Most fishermen travel to the Upper Parana for this very reason. But during the summer months there is another unheralded denizen of the deep that provides excellent sport for anglers in the know – the Pacu.

Oftentimes referred to as the permit of the Parana, the pacu probably won’t win any beauty contests. But like its saltwater cousin, it is challenging to fool, encounters are rare, and once on the line, they fight harder and run faster than any other fish found in freshwater. Pacu are omnivorous, though selective eaters. During the summer months they move out from the deep and take positions under the streamside foliage to catch falling seeds and fruit. When they are on the “seed hatch”, they abandon their typically wary inspection of potential meals and gobble up anything that is round, green and makes nice “bloop” sounds as it falls into the water. Enter our “fly” of choice: a green plastic ball pushed down the hook shank. While it may technically count as a fly and certainly isn’t the most elegant thing to cast, that didn’t seem to bother the Pacu. Every single fish we spotted inhaled the green ball without the slightest doubt. And if the fish was facing the wrong direction our a sloppy cast put the fly well out of sight, the loud sound of the splashing ball would immediately illicit an about-face, and the pacu would come looking. A blind amputee could have probably caught one.

Last week I had my good friend and incredible photographer, Isaias Miciu, visit me from Argentina. I wanted to show him the best of what the Pacific NW has to offer, even though December certainly isn’t the best time of year to pursue outdoor activities in this neck of the woods. Luckily Mother Nature was kind to us with the weather, and we were able to combine steelhead fishing, surfing and skiing in a single trip. Isa really captured the essence of the NW outdoor lifestyle. Volcanic Survivors II

Almost five weeks passed after the beginning of the season and besides the volcano eruption fishing conditions are great, lakes and rivers remain with high and clear water. It seems that rainbows are already returned from the spawning and getting stronger and silver again. On the other hand, migratory brown are fat, silver and already entering into Limay river . We have been going to the Limay quite often, most of the days have been windy making fishing a bit difficult but that has not been an excuse for not catching fish.

We haven´t been in the Rio Manso system yet ( Manso River, Fonk, hess and Mascardi Lakes), but we have heard it´s giving great rewards, as usual by this time of the season.

If you are interested to fish the Limay river with us, we use Bariloche city as a base, the airport is being remodeled that is why flights from BA are only available to Neuquen or Esquel city, both around 300 to 400 km away, the rest of the trip has to be by ground (airlines include ground transfer to Bariloche which takes around 3 to 4 hours).
