Last day on Limay River

Here’s some pics from my last day on the Limay last month. Thanks to Nico, Alex, Mariano and Rodrigo for making it a great one. I can’t think of anywhere in the world that has such quality, trophy-trout fishing so close to a metropolitan center. If only we could be so lucky here in the lower 48.

FISHING REPORT

WEEK 8 – FEB 20th – FEB 27th, 2010

O V E R A L L C O N D I T I O N S: The week started with good water level. Unfortunately it rained overnight and the river rose and became muddy once again. Weather got better and we could fish again the last two days.

The air temperature was low during the week, from 2 to 12 degrees celcius.

R I V E R C O N D I T I O N S : We could fish the Irigoyen the first day and the last two.. The rest of the week the river was muddy and high. We went to the Malenguena few times.

F I S H I N G : We started the week with dropping water and the fishing was getting good until it rained that night and we found once the river high and muddy the next day. After that we decide to go fishing the Malenguena. We caught some sea trout, nothing over 12 pounds, most of the fish were between 4 to 8 pounds. The last two days we could fish the Irigoyen again and caught some good fish.

Sinking tips ranging from 3 to 6 inches per second used with midsized flies. The size of the fish landed ranged from 4 to 19 pounds.

T O T A L C A T C H E S : Six rods fishing 6 days caught 25 sea trout averaging 8 pounds and the biggest of the week was an 19 pounder.

F I S H I N G R E P O R T

W E E K 6 – FEB 6th – FEB 13th, 2010

O V E R A L L C O N D I T I O N S: The week started with southern wind which brought rain all week. The river rose about a meter and a half the first day, we haven’t seen the river so high ever before, there were trees floating down the river!

The air temperature was low during the week, from 2 to 12 degrees celcius.

Thanks to the helicopter we could do some trips to lagoons close to Tolhuin and the Malenguena later in the week.

R I V E R C O N D I T I O N S : Irigoyen river was unfishable for the whole week, we could start fishing the Malenguena river the third day when it got clearer.

F I S H I N G : We didn’t catch any single fish on the Irigoyen, the river was extremely high and muddy. We caught some fish on the Malenguena. At least we should do some fishing regarding the bad weather conditions.

Sinking tips ranging from 3 to 6 inches per second used with mid sized flies. The size of the fish landed ranged from 3 to 14 pounds.

T O T A L C A T C H E S : Three rods fishing 6 days caught 10 sea trout averaging 6 pounds and the biggest of the week was a 14 pounder.

Limay River -End of the Season-

We have spent the whole summer in the Irigoyen river lodge. Fishing was superb until February, we could´t enjoy it for to long due to the bad weather that stayed with us for almost the whole month of February ! Besides the bad weather we have lots of stories to tell about this beautiful river with massive sea trout!

Being back in my hometown Bariloche, I don’t stop hearing from other fishing buddies that Limay river is rocking! Nico and I decided to do an afternoon fishing session and try some new mini rafts. We floated from the bridge and finished at Rincon Chico. The river is flowing nicely at the moment, it has a good water level and the temperature is optimal. During the float trip down the Limay, Nico managed to catch a nice brown at “El Curbón”, right at the end of the day.

Unluckily water level has dropped and fishing still pretty good! We haven´t hooked as many fish as in the very beginning of the season but the biggest fish were caught these last days.
