I recently had the privilege of hosting a trip to the upper Rio Parana for 6 days of golden dorado, pira pita and pacu fishing. The river was extremely high due to heavy rains in Brazil, but that didn’t seem to deter the dorado from displaying their characteristic acrobatics. Trying to capture jumps on camera is almost, and i repeat, almost, as much fun as having the rod in hand, but you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Just an update. We’ve been in the Amazon rainforest of Bolivia a few weeks ago, scouting and checking the fishing conditions before our first season starts up in August.

The Secure River is a pristine clear water stream, where the freshwater dorado lives in the Amazon basin. It’s a unique blend of this extremely powerful species and Amazon species like the Yatorana (one of the strongest freshwater fishes in South America) and the Pirapitinga (a pacu specie). Both of these are fished sight casting and run like torpedoes.
On this trip it was the first time that our team had entered and scouted the Agua Negra stream (means black water), a small tributary of the headwaters of Secure River. It’s a small stream, with incredible clear water that flows from Andes Mountains. The more upstream we went the more run-pool pocket system the stream was. Then we finally understood the reason for the name of this stream. The more we reached the upper parts with the Indian canoes; huge schools of sabalos (a common baitfish) were running everywhere and turned literally the clear water dark by their sheer numbers.
The place is truly, totally wild… Jaguar, Tapir and small deer’s footprints everywhere announced that there aren’t alone. Pure Jungle.
The Pirapitinga is one the biggest challenges on these waters. They are very spooky, and we stalk carefully to spot fish on pools and then sight casting, it’s necessary a very good presentation. When done properly the follow is made with no doubts and the following fight is very exciting. These powerful, round bodied fish with bulldog jaws fight incredibly strongly, and almost always get into your backing with a series of long, determined runs.
Fishing with 6/7 weight rods, sight casting for Pirapitingas with 12-17 pound line and Dorados ranging 8-26 pounds once again prooved that this area is the newest and most exciting door to be opened in fly fishing. During the expedition we floated the Secure River from the first lodge (in construction) to the Oromomo Indian community. This float trip gave us numerous options and Dorado was present all long the way down in very good average sizes. Casting to the fallen trees and runs provided certain action. Wading and sight casting in crystal clear waters for some of the most sporting freshwater species in the world… what more could you want?

Situated in the virgin Esteros del Ibera in Corrientes province, Pira Lodge is the most recognized lodge in the world of Dorado fly fishing. Twice the size of the Everglades and the second largest marshland in the world (behind the Pantanal in Brazil), Esteros del Ibera boasts a staggering array of wildlife. Caiman and capabarra (the largest rodent in the world) are common sights, and the area is one of the world’s most alluring destinations for birding aficionados. I was so blown away by the sheer amount and variety of bird species that it almost made the fishing seem secondary. Almost.

The weather is highly variable at Pira, and in our short stay we experienced everything from pleasant, sunny days to torrential downpours and lightning storms. When dealing with mother nature you simply never know what to expect, but the fish gods must have been smiling because the dorado action was surprisingly consistent, regardless of the weather. In recent years Pira has been plagued by low water conditions, and the general consensus had been that the Esteros were full of only small fish. Luckily for us that wasn’t the case. We found a lot of sizable fish and several in the 10-14 lb range. A dorado over 10lbs is a great fish anywhere, and especially in the pristine environment found at Pira. In fact, over the 4 days that we were there we saw only one other person – a lone gauche tending his cattle. Wild indeed. Next it’s farther north to fish the brawling Rio Paraná near the Paraguayan border. Stay tuned! Peace

Here at Faraway Fly Fishing we’re unabashed fishing addicts who try to squeeze in as much fishing in as many different places as humanly possible. Oftentimes this fishing wanderlust comes at the expense of strained relationships, ballooning credit card statements and even the occasional night spent on the airport floor. But looking back over the previous 12 months, I’ve realized that it was worth every bit. Below is a brief recap of some of the amazing places I had the good fortunate to fish last year. Hopefully 2009 will be just as good!

At the start of 2008 I found myself guiding at Kau Tapen Lodge on the Rio Grande in Tierra del Fuego. It was a privilege to be guiding on what is undoubtedly the world’s best sea-run brown trout river and also one of the nicest lodges anywhere.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-131" title="Kau Tapen Sea run Brown trout" src="http://farawayflyfishing.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/kt_2008_bm-23lbs.jpg?w=300" alt="First 20+ lb fish of the season.

Head Guide and all around bad-ass, Matt Breuer

Photo by Pancho Panzer, owner/operator of Patagonia Fishing Hosts

After a long but successful season at KT, I took the bus north across the Straight of Magellan to meet up with our good friend Rodrigo Amadeo on the Santa Cruz to fish for the elusive Atlantic Steelhead. We spent a total of 10 days on the river, eating asados and fishing hard when the conditions permitted. There’s very few places left in the world where you can spend several days fishing and floating some 200km of river and only see one other fisherman. Although the fishing pressure is light almost to the point of non-existent, like steelhead fishing everywhere you still have to put your time in. Luckily we hooked up a few times:

Rodrigo Amadeo with Atlantic Steelhead

steelhead fishing the middle reaches of the Santa Cruz

Rodrigo with hot santa cruz fish

Los dos Boludos

After 10 days on the river, it was back north to Buenos Aires for a few months. Coming from a region of Patagonia with a population density comparable to the Sahara Desert to a city of 13 million inhabitants was an enjoyable, yet drastic change. I rented an apartment and starting teaching English. Although it was an incredible experience, I gradually realized that a fishing bum such as myself doesn’t fair all that well for extended periods of time in a noisy, congested metropolitan.

My apartment on Avenida Santa Fe

Nonetheless, I was able to squeeze in a few days a fly fishing for golden dorado with our friend/guide Peto in an incredible region of Argentina near the Paraguayan border.

Peto w/ big golden dorado

After 7 1/2 months in Argentina, it was time to return stateside for while. My first stop was the Deschutes River in Oregon, and then I rushed up to Southeast Alaska to catch the tail end of the fishing season up there. It had been two summers since I had been to AK, so I was excited to get up there again:

Then I hitched a ride with my friends Mit, Laurie and Curtis on a halibut schooner from Ketchikan to Seattle. Cruising the inside passage is an experience that everyone should do at least once in their lives.

That put me back in the lower 48 just in time for the October steelhead season. My favorite time of year in the Northwest!

Nico and I were then graciously invited by Tom McMurray and Brandon White of Marine Ventures Foundation to fly to Jackson, WY and try our hands at some western trout fishing. Nico had never trout fished in the U.S. before, and although it’s not Patagonia, I think he was still impressed:

For Thanksgiving I headed to the east coast to visit family and was able to meet up with Brandon of Lateral Line for a day of Chesapeake Bay striper fishing. I’d never fished for stripers before and although we didn’t find any big fish that day, it’s always cool to add another fish to species list.

first striper

As if Jackson Hole and stiper fishing on the Chesapeake weren’t enough, Tom and Brandon invited me on yet another incredible trip, this time to Bair’s lodge in South Andros in the Bahamas. It had been a couple years since I’d been flats fishing, so needless to say I was very excited. Renowned fisheries biologists Jack & Bonnie Stanford where also there, and it was a real honor for a layman like myself to pick their brains about fishing related topics. Professor Stanford is a wealth of information and also the impetus behind the highly successful study on sea run brown trout in the Rio Grande. Having tagged and measured lots of fish for the study, I really enjoyed coming full circle by meeting the man behind the madness. We also had some great fishing, catching bonefish, barricuda and even a few sharks. The enormous 10lb + bonefish that I farmed still haunts me, even several weeks after the fact.

Well, that pretty much sums up the best trips of 2008. Can’t wait to see what ‘09 brings. Stay Tuned

One of the most respected and knowledgeable fly fishing guides in Argentina is Guillermo Ricigliano, who graciously helped us with some of the research for Fly Fishing in Patagonia: A Trout Bum’s Guide to Argentina. He seems to have a supernatural talent for always catching the biggest fish. Be it huge brown trout in Patagonia or a trophy dorado in northern Argentina, he never fails to impress. On a trip to a relatively new destination called the Rio Juramento in northwest Argentina last October, he landed what is the record fly-caught Dorado for the river. It weighted 17.5 kilos!! (38.6 lbs)
