Rio Manso Lodge

Surrounded entirely by the pristine wilderness of Argentina's largest park system, Nahuel Huapi National Park, the Río Manso’s astonishingly clear waters flow through 40 miles of deep valleys and fertile lakes, surrounded on all sides by exotic Valdivian rainforest. Punctuated views of the glacier-covered slopes of nearby Mount Tronador – one of the highest peaks in the region – further add to the splendor of this isolated area. The Río Manso Lodge sits in the heart of this awe-inspiring wilderness, yet is only a 90 minute drive from the bustling tourist haven of Bariloche and Patagonia's most frequented airport.

Fishing Program

Rio Manso Lodges fishes 15 miles of the Río Manso, which flows in and out of 5 small lakes around the property (Lagos Fonck, Hess, Roca, Moscos and Cesares). The area is divided into 6 beats, and includes some smaller tributaries as well. Rafts are used in the rivers and skiffs in the lakes. Most of our fishing is done from the boats, although some wading opportunities do exist. All the waters are less than 20 minutes away from the Lodge.

Right in front of the lodge is one of the best dry-fly fishing spots in the entire region, The Hess Channels, where just about every evening reliable insect hatches bring fish to the surface. Its not uncommon for guests to request "just a few more casts" out there, even after an entire day of fishing a different stretch of water. And thanks to the unique geography of the region, the infamous Patagonian winds are rarely a problem here. Unlike many other fisheries in the area, which are located farther east on the exposed steppe, the Río Manso is tucked neatly away in the lush mountains.

Rainbows, browns and hearty brook trout are all present, though Rainbows are the most common. Fish tend to average 18-20", and 10-15 fish per rod, per day is not unusual. Several 7-8 lbs. (25-28") trout are usually caught each season as well.

"Prime Time" is Nov- Jan, and late March - end of April. In February and early March the fishing is usually slower due to the warm weather, but this is an ideal time for families or non-anglers for the same reason. We have a lower rate for non angling companions and we have a number of guided activities for them such as:

Hiking and trekking - from easy 30 minute walks to the nearby "Los Alerces" waterfall, to day-long treks to the top of surrounding mountains.
Horse back riding thru the forest and following the banks of rivers and lakes.
Bird watching to spot the splendid Andean Condor, the beautiful giant Magellan Wookpecker or the rare Torrent Duck
Float trips and lake kayaking to take photos of the many attractions.
In each of these attractive options you will have the opportunity to photograph breathtaking scenery, experience wildlife and learn about our unique ecosystem. Even sitting in our front garden and reading a book surrounded by the magnificient views is quite an experience.

Accommodations and Travel

The Lodge is an elegant and comfortable new building, with room for 8 anglers. We have a spacious common area with fireplaces, a cozy reading room, a dry sauna, and much more. All rooms have a breathtaking view of the glacier-covered Mt. Tronador and Hess Lake. Some rooms even have jacuzzis.
Accessibility: We are located only 90 minutes from Patagonia’s best-served airport. That means that you’ll be fishing the same afternoon of your arrival, gaining a half day of fishing over most other programs.
Privacy: RML is the only private property in this Southern part of Nahuel Huapi National Park, so the next neighbor is nearly an hour away. We fish public waters but they are so lightly-trafficked that encounters with other anglers are rare.
Setting: The lodge is located in an incredibly privileged place with stunning scenery, surrounded by spectacular forests and untouched beauty. Trout were introduced 100 years ago...and never stocked again.

The season runs from November – May.
