Dorado are the top-level predators of their domain and have a voracious appetite to match. This requires us to throw large, noisy flies to get their attention and imitate the local baitfish. Coming with the proper rods & lines to accomplish this will make your fishing experience as enjoyable as possible.

Please review the list below;

• Rods: 6/7-weight, no longer than 9ft. Shorter rods cast more accurately and lever big fish out of structure.
• Fly lines: Tropical WF lines with an aggressive front taper turn over large flies best. Rio’s saltwater Clouser and F/I lines both work well. Standard bonefish lines also do the job. For better turnover, cut 4- 8 ft off the front.
• Leader: A strong butt section tapering to 15- 20 lb test, 7- 9 ft max. Keep it weaker than your fly line and backing. That way, a break-off costs you only the fly.
• Wire leader: American Fishing Wire in 25- 30 lb is our favorite. Your guide carries it, but bring your own for rigging solo.
• Flies: Big, gaudy, and noisy wins. Think 3-5 inches on 1/0-3/0 hooks, mostly dark, with black the top pick. Deceiver styles with spun deer-hair heads and bead chain excel. Dorado have powerful jaws and sharp teeth, so choose durable synthetics over feathers. Puglisi flies (epflies.com) cast easily and hold up well. A weed guard cuts snags on off-target casts. Guides supply flies, but bring your own selection too.
• Clothing: Spring and summer in Buenos Aires run hot, so pack for the tropics. Choose lightweight clothing with ample sun protection. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, and sunscreen. A light rain jacket rounds it out.
