THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE CASTS
A great trip does not come from a brochure. It comes from people who have fished the water and learned the rhythms of each season firsthand. It is the foundation of every trip we build. We design trips around the fish you want and the way you like to fish.
Meet the people who will plan your days and guide you on the water.
Barrett
Mattison
Residing in Seattle, WA, Barrett’s fly fishing travels have taken him from the rivers of Alaska to the windswept waters of Tierra del Fuego, and many places in between. He spent several seasons in Argentina – as both a trout bum and fishing guide – an experience that resulted in the book, “Fly Fishing in Patagonia: A Trout Bum’s Guide to Argentina.” He also helped build the Ponoi museum in Russia, and to this day he continues to push into new water – currently scouting steelhead in the rivers of Canada and roosterfish and sailfish along the coast of Mexico.
Alex
Trochine
Born and raised in Bariloche, in the heart of Patagonia, Alex has had a fly rod in his hand since he was a kid. What started as a childhood obsession grew into a lifelong calling, and becoming a guide was less a career choice than an inevitability. Today he co-manages Austral Kings alongside his brother Nico, guides in Iceland, and has helped build out both a new Patagonia program and the Tarpon fishing in Brazil. From Patagonian rivers to Icelandic runs to jungle waters, Alex has guided extensively across Argentina, Bolivia, Iceland Russia and beyond, reading water the way only someone who grew up fishing can.
Nico
Trochine
Born and raised in Bariloche in Patagonia, Nico has been fly fishing the waters of Argentina since the tender age of 8. Considered an expert on sea trout in Argentina, he splits his time between managing Austral Kings, designing custom trips for his clients, and guiding sea trout in Iceland. A dedicated saltwater angler at heart, Nico also has a deep love for Tarpon fishing in Mexico and Panama, and helped develop the new Tarpon destination in Brazil. He has explored remote rivers across Patagonia, Russia, and Bolivia in search of untouched water.
Evan
Jones
What began as a healthy hobby quickly devolved into a full-blown obsession with fly fishing that has dragged Evan all over the American West and to parts of Central and South America. Whether he’s chasing trout in a mountain stream or wading into saltwater in search of something bigger, that same obsession still drives every trip he takes. Along the way, he co-authored the book, “Fly Fishing in Patagonia: A Trout Bum’s Guide to Argentina,” drawing on the seasons he spent chasing fish across Argentina.
Ken
Maimone
Travel and fly fishing have always been complementary passions for Ken. From the storied rivers of the Catskills, to the wilds of Montana, Alaska, and British Columbia, he has always sought out the best, most remote destinations – the kind of places where the fishing is wild and the scenery is bigger still. Decades of chasing fish across some of the most rugged corners of the map have given him a deep understanding of what makes a trip truly worth the journey. That lifetime of travel experience has proved invaluable in helping Faraway Fly Fishing clients get to the remote corners of Argentina and Chile, where he takes real pride in matching each angler to the water that suits them best.
