Waters fished: Itapará holds exclusive rights across four distinct Dry Season Zones spanning roughly 1,000 miles of the Amazon Basin, with multiple private rivers flowing through Indian Reserves and Government Preserves. Each group of 8 anglers is assigned both a primary river and a backup river to ensure optimal conditions regardless of rainfall anomalies. All waters are guarded by indigenous community members — completely unfished by anyone other than Itapará guests.
Fishing season: July through February — the low-water months when 70–80% of the flooded jungle dries up, concentrating peacock bass into just 2–3% of their wet-season range. This is when the giants are catchable.
Access: Six independently operated River Trains, each reached by Cessna Caravan turboprop floatplanes departing Manaus at 6 am every Saturday. Flights range from 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the destination river.
Weather: Daytime temperatures 85–95°F with intense sun and some wind. Nights drop to 65–75°F. Occasional rain showers possible even in the dry season. No biting insects — a natural result of the tannin-rich black waters fished.

Fishing boats: Custom-built, all-welded aluminum shallow-draft tunnel boats — 20 ft long, 40 HP outboard, trolling motor, high swivel seats. Capable of navigating sandbars as shallow as a few inches, reaching areas completely inaccessible to other outfitters.
Guides: Hard-core sport fishermen with deep knowledge of Amazon angling. Many have guided the same waters for 15+ years. All trained through a thorough guide training program sourced from local indigenous communities.

Unpack, orientation, quick lunch, fish all afternoon.
Breakfast at 7:00 am, guides ready by 7:30 am. Morning session 3–4 hours. Midday option: riverside BBQ on the sandbar or return to River Train for a full meal and nap. The afternoon session continues until early evening. Massage, sundowner drinks, dinner at 9:00 pm. Evening on the sandbar with wine under the stars.

Fly rods: Fast-action models only. Bring at least two — rods break under jungle stress.
- Heavy setup: 9-ft, 9 or 10-weight with large arbor reel and smooth drag
- Medium-heavy setup: 9-ft, 7-weight with matching large arbor reel
Lines: Sinking lines are far more effective than floating. Bring a 24-ft sink tip for both the 7-wt and 9/10-wt. Also pack a floating line for poppers and sliders.
Leaders: Peacocks are not leader-shy. Use a straight 6-ft section of 40–50 lb fluorocarbon. Anything lighter will snap — their teeth are extremely abrasive.
Flies: 6-inch (5/0) bi-colored bucktails in red/yellow, olive/white, black/white, orange/black. Big Deceivers, Bunnies, Saltwater Zonkers, Clouser Minnows, Popovic's Silicone Mullet. Add generous Flashabou or Crystal Flash to all patterns. Saltwater poppers in red/yellow and pearl/olive. 6–8 inch steel leaders for piranha.

Loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored cottons or synthetics with UV protection. Long sleeves and long pants strongly recommended — sunburn through thin fabric is common. Pack four long-sleeved tropical shirts, two pairs of tropical-weight pants, a swimsuit, sneakers or deck shoes, a fishing hat, a quality lightweight rain jacket and pants, and lightweight cotton gloves. It takes 10–12 years for a peacock bass to reach 20 pounds, and trophy fish are consistently available in these protected waters because the preservation incentive — the exclusive arrangement with indigenous communities — is far stronger than any poaching incentive.. Expect fish that slam your fly like a freight train.
No. The tannin-rich black waters and low water levels that Itapará specifically seeks out naturally repel biting insects. This is one of the most commented-on features of the experience.
The River Train is a convoy of floating cabins pushed by a shallow-draft tugboat. It moves along the river, repositioning to follow the fish. On any given day it may be moving toward you while you fish. You are never more than 5–15 minutes from your floating camp.
